Upper Mustang is a restricted area it required special permit to enter upper Mustang region for foreigner. it is an ancient, remote Himalayan sub-Kingdom which lies in the northern central part of Nepal and at the top of Kaligandaki River. Upper Mustang consists of two distinct regions: southern part and northern where the languages, culture and traditions are same as Tibetan people, consider as one of the most interesting and picturesque places in Nepal. The whole area has an isolated and mystical feel to it, enchanting and inspiring visitors.

The independent Kingdom was founded in 1380 by Ame Pal, and annexed by Nepal in the late 1700s, the former Kingdom of Lo, in 1950 was it officially declared part of Nepal. Most of the population of this valley lives near the river bank of Kali Gandaki located 2800 to 3900 meters above sea level. The administrative center of  this District is Jomsom which has had an airport since 1962 and has become the main tourist entry point since valley was opened for trekking to western tourism in 1992. Even prior to the foundation of Mustang as a kingdom, the area was important in Himalayan cultural and religious life.
