Mt. Makalu is located about 14 miles east of Mount Everest. This is the fifth highest mountain in the world and has an altitude of 8,485 m. This mountain range situated in the edge of Nepal and China and it is an isolated peak. April and May (spring) are the ideal months for climbing.

It has the structure of a perfect pyramid with four sharp ridges. Mount Makalu is known for its spectacular beauty. Climbing is a highly challenging task and for many years it was not attempted. In the north of the Makalu summit there is a subsidiary peaks known as Chomo Lonzo.

A narrow saddle separates Makalu and Chomo Lonzo, situated is in the Makalu Barun National Park Nepal. Peak is identified as one among the most difficult mountains of the world to climb. The pitches are very steep and ridges are as sharp as knife thereby making it a very dangerous mountain to climb. In the final stage of the climbing technical rocking is required.

First climbed of this peak was made in May 15, 1955 by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition led by Jean Franco. Makalu trekking is formerly a restricted trekking area of eastern Nepal, it extent five major ecological zones where can be found the lush, tropical Arun Valley, dense forests or rhododendron, fir and alpine meadows that lead to the mighty Barun glacier.

Arun River is in the east of the park and Sagarmatha National Park is in the west. It is a famous wildlife sanctuary, plants of all major ecological zones: tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, alpine and sub-alpine are found here. Rare species of animals and plants flourish in diverse climates. Over 3000 species of flowering plants, 440 species of birds, and 75 species of mammals, including endangered snow leopard, red panda and musk deer, have been recorded.
